Choosing a Watch 3 min read
Can a child use an Apple Watch without an iPhone?
The short version
Your child can have a watch without having their own phone. The important part is choosing the right watch, setup and connection. Not every Apple Watch will work.
Yes, with a family-managed watch
Apple Watch For Your Kids, previously called Family Setup, lets an adult manage a child’s watch from a compatible iPhone. The child does not need their own iPhone. This setup needs a cellular-capable Apple Watch; a GPS-only model is not suitable. A cellular plan is optional during initial setup, although some features need one.
Check the exact model and software
Apple’s requirements depend on the watch model and software version. Use the compatibility chart and the family-watch guide for the version you intend to run. A second-hand watch being eligible for an older Family Setup does not make it compatible with every newer app.
For example, Series 4, Series 5 and the first-generation SE stop at watchOS 10.6.1. OkayTu’s current build targets watchOS 11 or later and iOS 18 or later. These are software minimums, not a promise that every device combination has completed physical-device testing.
Make a small buying checklist
Start with the places and moments where you want to keep in touch: walking home, visiting a friend or playing nearby. Take this list to the seller and your prospective provider before paying.
- Confirm the full watch model, cellular capability and supported software.
- Check the adult’s iPhone against that exact watch and software combination.
- Try the case size and strap on your child’s wrist.
- Compare the watch cost, cellular plan and any app subscription separately.
Where OkayTu fits
OkayTu is being built around a simple family voice connection. It does not supply the watch or mobile service. Before buying hardware specifically for the beta, contact us: installation and delivery on family-managed watches are still being validated.
