A quick watch check before your child heads out
The short version
Shoes, watch, quick hello. A small routine can help everyone know what to expect without turning every outing into a technology test.
Start with battery and a comfortable fit
Look at the watch’s charge together and allow time to top it up before a longer outing. Apple recommends the included magnetic charger or a compatible alternative. Do not assume yesterday’s battery life predicts today’s.
Have your child check the strap and show that they can wake the screen. Pick a regular charging place at home so finding the charger is not another task on the way out.
Try a real hello
Send a short test using the communication method you expect to use, then wait for an actual reply. Check again somewhere representative of the outing; a successful test in the kitchen says little about a different location.
During the OkayTu beta, practise with both Watch apps open and connected. Two-way Watch voice is implemented, but real-world reliability is still being tested. The iPhone app currently receives voice; replying from iPhone is not yet implemented.
Agree on the plan without the watch
Make the backup simple enough for your child to explain back to you. The goal is confidence, not a long list to memorise.
- Agree the meeting place and time.
- Choose a trusted adult to approach if they need help.
- Explain what to do if the watch is flat or a message gets no answer.
- Keep routine check-ins short so they can get back to playing.
Keep emergencies separate from app messages
Apple’s Emergency SOS is separate from OkayTu. Availability depends on the watch, its connection and local network support; learn the relevant Apple instructions together without placing a practice emergency call.
OkayTu is not an emergency service. Its planned Help, location and low-battery features are not a substitute for supervision or a backup plan. Do not rely on those planned features during the current beta.
